提起说明文，很多同学都会和议论文混淆。说明文定义如下：
Exposition is explanation（说明，解释）
- To explain the objective（客观的）character and nature of things.
- To clarify the occurrence(发生/出现)and development(发展) of things.
从以上定义可以看出，说明文可以分为两类，一类是说明事物类，一类是说明事理类。这两类跟议论文最重要的区别就在于说明文有明确的观点，写作过程中不需要发表作者自己的观点。而议论文是要作者发表自己的观点并对自己的观点进行论述。
一、说明文写作结构
一般来说，说明文主要可以按照三段式来写。
- Introduction：引出话题
- Body ：详细论述题目要求论述的内容（可分段）
- Conclusion：重申话题或总结全文
二、说明文写作分析
下面以A Great Invention为例来看一下说明文到底应该如何写。
A Great Invention
Through the years, new inventions have changed the way we live. Think about one invention that has made your life different from your parents. Write a paragraph explaining how this invention has affected your life. Be sure to include a topic sentence, at least 3 supporting details, examples or explanations and a closing sentence.
首先，要明确写作话题，A great invention，而且题目中对invention是有限定的，“made your life different from your parents”，所以在选择invention时需要注意，
其次是has affected your life，所以很多跟生活无关的发明是并不符合题意的。
其次，要明确写作任务及写作内容。
写作任务 - A great invention
写作内容 - explaining how this invention has effected your life
再次，明确写作结构。
三段式：首段引出话题，中间段需包含一个主题句、至少三个支撑点及结尾句，尾段总结全文。
